Five Stanley Cup Finals since then have had a Canadian team lose to an American team: 1994 New York Rangers defeated Vancouver Canucks, 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning defeated Calgary Flames, 2006 Carolina Hurricanes defeated Edmonton Oilers, 2007 Anaheim Ducks defeated Ottawa Senators, and 2011 Boston Bruins defeated Canucks. The last Finals to be played between two Canadian teams was in 1989, when the Calgary Flames defeated the Canadiens.
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were named after the Disney film The MightyDucks. Disney was the owner of the team from the team's first year in 1993 until 2005, when the Mighty Ducks were sold to Henry and Susan Samueli. The new owners removed the "Mighty" from the team's name before the 2006-07 season and it is currently the Anaheim Ducks. Many commented that it was ironic that the year the "Mighty" was taken away, the team proved it was mighty and went on to capture the Stanley Cup.
