The archers initials must be engraved on each arrow while shooting USA Archery Tournaments, but not necessary for hunting or practice.
Archery is Bhutan's national sport; nearly every village has an archery range.
In individual events an archer is allowed up to 40 seconds to fire each arrow.
Bows were used nearly 25,000 years ago, mainly for war, but now for target and hunting.
Archery was in the Olympics in 1900, discontinued in 1924, and reintroduced in 1972 in the Munich Olympics.
The average field target for an archer is multi-colored.
Not all arrows are wood! Some are aluminum and most are carbon fiber, which is strong and light.
Archers can fire arrows up to 150mph *non-composite bow* at the targets 70 meters away.
Your dominant hand may not be the same side as your dominant eye; archers should shoot according to their dominant eye.
Rules for the individual Olympic competition: In the individual competitions, 64 archers compete. The competition begins with the ranking round. Each archer shoots 72 arrows (in twelve ends, or groups, of 6 arrows). They are then ranked by score to determine their seeding for the single-elimination bracket. Seed 64 will shoot against the 1st seeded archer. Rankings for each archer is determined by the archer's score in the round in which the archer was defeated, with the archers defeated in the first round being ranked 33rd through 64th. After the rankings round takes place, 1/32 Elimination will take place, followed by 1/16 Elimination, then 1/8 Elimination, then the QuarterFinals, SemiFinals then Finals. Every Elimination eliminates half of the competitors except the Finals which only determines who qualifies for the Gold Medal Match and Bronze Medal Match respectively. The target face are 122cm in diameter and 70 metres in distance with 5 different colours: * Inner Yellow -10pts, Outer Yellow - 9pts * Inner Red - 8 pts, Outer Red - 7pts * Inner Blue - 6pts, Outer Blue - 5 pts * Inner Black - 4pts, Outer Black - 3pts * Inner White - 2pts, Outer White - 1pts In each Elimination round, Archers shoot 6 sets of 3 arrows each with a minimum of 1 (excluding miss shots) to a maximum of 10 points. Then after a total of 18 shots, the scores are tabulated and the winner goes into the next Elimination or Quarter Finals round while the loser get eliminated. In the Quarter Finals round, 8 archers shoot 4 sets of 3 arrows (scored 10..1). After 12 shots, the scores are tabulated and the 4 winners go into the semi-Finals round while the losers are eliminated. In the Semi-Final round, 4 archers shoot 4 sets of 3 arrows (scored 10..1). After 12 shots, the scores are tabulated and the 2 winners enter the Finals round to determine Gold and Silver while the losers enter the Finals round to determine the Bronze medalist. If a tie exists at the end of 12 arrows in any finals round, one arrow is shot for the win. If a tie still exists, one more arrow is shot. If a tie still exists, the archer with the arrow closest to the center is declared the winner.
When you are about to shoot, you have to wait until somebody calls the line hot. When they say the line is hot, that means that everybody is past the shooting line and that nobody is in front of anybody. When you get done shooting, somebody (usually the same somebody who called the line hot) will call the line clear. That means that everybody has put their bows in a spot that is away and ready for the next round and that everybody has shot their all their arrows for that round. Then you walk... Not run... To get your arrows. Depending on how close you are to the people you are shooting next to, the top row targets would wait for the bottom row targets to get their arrows and then the top row gets theirs. When you carry your arrows back (unless you have a quiver, which in competitions are required) you must carry ten point down. Just another etiquette thing while shooting is to not back away from the line if the people next to you are in full draw so that you don't distract them from the corner of their eye. There are plenty more rules that apply to competitive shooting than the beginners rules that I just described, but that would take a while to type... So, hope I helped! :)
One thing t remember is that (perhaps ironically considering it was originally a weapon) archery is one of the safest sports you can play. Although the bows can be powerful and dangerous implements in the wrong circumstances, as long as you follow the safety rules responsibly it is very safe to play. It is also significantly harder to accidentally shoot anyone compared to using firearms.
The first thing the beginning archer should do is find someone who will teach them proper archery safety, technique and practices. The best place to find that person is at a local archery club, such as those which are certified by the U.S. Olympic Archery Committee (USA Archery) in the U.S.A or the British Grand National Archery Society in Great Britain. For those who are not interested in Olympic style archery, there are many other clubs, organizations and societies which concentrate on the other styles of archery, such as the English Field Archery Association (Great Britain) and the National Field Archery Association (U.S.A.), as well as the Society for Creative Anachronisms, Inc. (an International Society dedicated to Education, Research and Re-Creation of the Mediaeval Period of History). Most organizations and societies do require payment of dues and/or fees, so be prepared.
There aren't many types of bows, however there are many custom made bows which highly differ from the standard modern bows. The most common types are Short Bows and Long Bows as well as Cross Bows. The strongest ones of course are Cross Bows, as these are powered automatically, whereas in the other two you have to physically pull the arrow.
