When snowboarding was starting to get popular in the 80's there was no such thing as snowboard boots. You could wear Sorels and be just fine. If you are looking to teach a youngster the sport these types of boots will work just fine. Don't waste $100-200 dollars on a brand name boot for the purpose of learning on the hill behind the house.
