How is the game rowing played?

Rowing isn't usually referred to as a game. Rowing events are more frequently referred to as regattas (or races). There are two main formats for regattas: head races or sprints. The race courses range from a couple thousand meters to several thousand meters in length. The sport of rowing can be compared to that of cross-country and track with the longer races (head races) generally taking place in the fall season and the shorter races (sprints) occurring in the spring. The rules of rowing competition vary depending on whether the event is categorized as a head race or sprint. Head races are simply timed races. Boats row through the starting line one by one and whoever crosses the finish line with the fastest time wins. In a sprint race, however, all the boats in a particular heat line up at the starting line and start from a dead standstill. These races are much more fast paced and intense as the competition is often neck-and-neck all the way across the finish line. The first boat to cross the finish line wins, even if only by a fraction of an inch!

What are rowing events called?

Rowing competitions are called regattas. Yes, rowing competitions are called regattas. Sometimes if it is just between two clubs, it is called a Duel or a Dual meet or race. There are regattas - small races, usually sprint. There are also longer races called long distance sculls or small boats head - there isn't very much difference between the two. Sprint races are usually short races (1-2km). There are also head races (usually 4-5km). Also, meets between three teams is called a tri-meet, or sometimes a tri-regatta (I've only heard the latter used for one competition).

How is rowing played?

Rowing is 'played' by racing boats agaisnt each other. In some races called "head races" the boats are set off one after the other and the boat that wins is the boat with the fastest time in a category. In regattas, the boats are raced in lanes and so it is whoever finishes the race first. There are also indoor rowing competitions where lots of people gather and compete on rowing machines (ergos) and depending on what their race is the winner is whoever got the greatest distance or the fastest time. There are many differnet categories for age, gender, weight and type of boat so each race is fair.
