As of the 2008 season, twice (2003, 2006).

A WNBA team in Detroit
The Phoenix Mercury defeated the Detroit Shock in five games (3 games to 2) to win the 2007 WNBA Finals. Phoenix point guard Cappie Pondexter was named the Finals MVP and this was the Mercury's first WNBA Championship.
Deanna Nolan, the star player for the Detroit Shock, was instrumental in the team's success during her tenure, especially noted for her achievements in the early 2000s. However, the Detroit Shock relocated and became the Tulsa Shock in 2010, and the franchise ultimately folded in 2016. Nolan has since retired from professional play, and as of my last knowledge update in October 2023, she is no longer an active player in the WNBA.
As of my last update, the Detroit WNBA team, known as the Detroit Shock, has been inactive since 2009 when the franchise was relocated to Tulsa. If a new team were to be established in Detroit, the venue would likely be the Little Caesars Arena, which is home to several sports teams and events. For the latest updates on the status of a Detroit WNBA team, please check current sports news sources.
In 2012, the Indiana Fever were the WNBA champions.
