This might be a somewhat simplified answer as I am not a sociologist or anthropologist. But hockey was invented/developed in Canada. Over the years hockey has become more than a sport. Indeed, it has become a vital part of the very fabric of our Canadian culture. There are few Canadians , male or female, who haven't played the game at some time in their lives, even if it has only been skating around with a puck and stick on a local pond or rink.
For a few reasons
1. Hockey originated in Canada
2. It's their national sport
3. Over half of the players in the NHL are Canadian
4. Many grew up playing it and it's a way of life
5. Hockey is awesome
Why do Americans love Baseball? Why do Americans so fat? These are all questions that can't be answered by a simple sentence.
Since Canada is in the northern part of the earth, it's a lot colder. When it's cold you have ice. When you have ice you play hockey.
