A 3 can mean one of 2 things. First, it can be referring to the 3rd position on the court, which is the middle front position. Also, it can be describing a type of hit (or spike). The three set is a quick, low set about 3 feet in front of the setter. And one foot above the net. It's an effective way for the middle hitter to hit around the block, or simply beat the block up.

A 3-2-1 is sometimes reffered to as 1-2-3. At least, in our school that is how it works. A 1-2-3 is a Pass (bump), set, spike (kill). Three hits that when used together create a hard-to-return play. Hope I helped. Thanks for the question.

While the ball is on one side of the court, it can only be touched (hit) three times. The only exception is if the opposing team spikes the ball and a front row player touches it. This touch is not considered one of the three hits. Usually the three hits are a bump (pass), set, and spike.
