They were at one point nicknamed the black socks because in 1919 the team intentionally lost the World Series. In 1901 they started out being called the white stockings which would evolve to the white sox. During the 1906 season they were nicknamed the "hitless wonders" because as a team they hit a mere .230 batting average and no one player better than .279. In 1977 they became a power hitting team and earned the nickname "The South side Hit man".
