No "quarters " are played in an Ice Hockey game. All regulation games consist of three 20 minute " periods." In NHL regular league play, a tie at the end of regulation time results in one additional, abbreviated, sudden-death overtime period. If the score remains tied after this overtime, a shootout results. In playoff games, additional
periods are 20 min. each and play continues until a goal is scored (no shootout).
