It is before the national championship.
I think that you are referring to the superbowl, but before that, there is the two divsion championship games that decide who plays in the superbowl.
In 1939 Texas A&M won the national championship game. Many people also claim that A&M, Notre Dame, and Michigan are still arguing over who won it in another year. (This is because both of these situations were before the BCS National Championship game era.)
The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909, eleven years before the National Football League was formed.

College football season normal starts before the NFL season does. College is normally 3 weeks into their season before the pros start.
It depends on what you use for the selector. Major College/D1A/FBS teams have never had an official National Champion. (assuming you mean the before mentioned divisions). See the related link below.
There was no true national championship game before the BCS era. However, in 1942 Georgia beat UCLA in the Rose Bowl to earn a share of the National Championship, along with Wisconsin and Ohio State.
One national championship They shared the Championship with OU. Because the first poll came out before the bowls were played OU was named national champion. After Kentucky defeated OU in the sugar bowl most sources recognized the wildcats as the national champion.
