  • The longest lines on the pitch are called the sidelines;
  • The lines adjacent to each end of these are called the backlines or baselines;
  • The line half way from these lines is called the half way line, or more commonly the centreline;
  • The lines between the centreline and backlines are the 23-metre liines;
  • The quarter circle shapes and the lines connecting them are collectively known as the circle.

In a standard NHL hockey rink, there are 3 major types of lines. All of the lines run horizontally across the rink. A red line near the end of the rink running directly across the hockey net is called a goal line. There are two goal lines in a rink, one at each end. Closer to the middle of the rink but not at the middle is a blue line called the blue line. There are two blue lines, one at each side of the centre of the rink. The final line spans directly across the middle of the rink. It is called the centre line. It is thicker than the other lines and is colored red.
