Fibreglass Canada worked with Canadiens Goalie Jaques Plante to develop the first-ever hockey goalie mask in 1960. http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blhockey.htm Montreal Candiens goalie Jacques Plante January 7, 1930, Montreal Canadien great Howie Morenz rings a shot off Clint Benedict's nose and cheekbone, the goalie for cross-town rival Montreal Maroons. This shot would cause Benedict to don a makeshift facemask based on either a football face guard or one worn by that of sparring boxers. Benedict found that the large protective nose piece impaired his vision, so after two games, he gave it up. Benedict' experiment was not recorded as the first goalie mask in history. That moment came nearly thirty years later on November 1, 1959 after New York Ranger Andy Bathgate hit Montreal Canadien goalie Jacques Plante with a shot off the face. Plante would leave the game to get stitched up and later return wearing a mask he had made himself for practices. Plante won the game. This was the birth of the goalie mask.

They are used as somewhat of a distraction, because when you look at the goalie, the first thing you look to is where you want to the puck to go, but if you concentrate on the mask, then the puck wont go where you want it to. i believe the first 2 goalies to have their masks painted were doug favel who had the "starburst" on his mask and gerry cheevers he had the stiches in his mask in the 70's

It was not until 1959 that a goaltender wore a mask full-time. On November 1, 1959, in a game between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante was struck in the face by a shot from Andy Bathgate.

The 1st goalie to wear a mask was the Montreal Maroons Clint Benedict who used a crude leather version for 5 games during the 1929-30 NHL season.

However the modern fiberglass style we're all familiar with was originated by the Montreal Canadiens Jaques Plant. After having his nose broken in a game with the New York Rangers (Nov 1, 1959), he returned from the locker room wearing the mask.

Why did Jacques Plante make the first hockey mask?

Jacques Plante made the first hockey mask because during one game he was injured so badly by a hockey puck to the face that he required several stitches. Following his injury he felt it appropriate to wear face protection (as he was a goalie and the odds of the injury re-occuring were fairly good).

Who was the first NHL goalie to wear a face mask?

Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons wore one for the one game in the 1920s, but it impeded his vision so he never wore it again. Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens is generally credited as the first to wear the mask regularly. More info: collectionscanada The first goalie ever to wear a hockey mask was Clint Benedict. He wore it for just one game but he was still the first to wear a hockey mask!Other people say that Jacques Plante wore the first mask but he didn't because it was in the 1950's that he wore a mask and in the 1920's is when Clint Benedict wore a mask! Yes, Clint Benedict was the first person to wear a mask in an NHL game, after diving on his knees and getting hit in the face by a puck. He purchased it at a local Boston sports store. Although, Jacques Plante is considered the first, it was actually Benedict who was the first one a mask.

Who was the first Toronto Maple Leaf to wear a goalie mask?

i don't know who made it, but i know who first wore a goalie mask. well back then, they didn't like to wear masks< but they got injured tons of times. Jaques Plante, a goalie for the Montreal canadaians got hit in the face and was injured. however he needed to continue the game because his back up wasn't there. Jaque practiced with a small wood mask for months but never used it in a game. He had no choice. He wore it, continued to wear it, and it got around the nhl.

How long did it take to invent the goalie mask?

The perfection of the goalie mask has been , and is, an ongoing process. In 1930, Ottawa goalie Clint Benedict wore a crude mask to protect a facial injury for five games. Other goalies wore masks for brief periods. However, on Nov.1, 1959, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens was injured and returned to the ice wearing a mask which he continued to wear in subsequent games. Over the years, all goalies at all levels started to wear facial protection and the masks evolved into the styles you see today and will no doubt continue to change and be improved.

When did goalies in hockey start to wear masks?

The first goalie mask worn full time was in 1959 by Jacque Plante in the NHL. It was a homemade fiberglass mask similar to the one worn by the character Jason Vorhees in the movie series Friday the 13th. Other masks had been used for a short time on and off before then but were usually masks from other sports, such as the fencing mask Elizabeth Graham used in 1927. In the 1970s the goalie mask changed into a cage/helmet combination which is still used by some lower level goalies (high school, college, recreational, etc) and has evolved into the fiberglass or Kevlar masks with a built in cage used by most goalies today in the NHL.
