The perfection of the goalie mask has been , and is, an ongoing process. In 1930, Ottawa goalie Clint Benedict wore a crude mask to protect a facial injury for five games. Other goalies wore masks for brief periods. However, on Nov.1, 1959, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens was injured and returned to the ice wearing a mask which he continued to wear in subsequent games. Over the years, all goalies at all levels started to wear facial protection and the masks evolved into the styles you see today and will no doubt continue to change and be improved.

No. A goalie cannot come out from the circle. Unless their stupid enough to take the risk and take their gear off and go to shoot it which would be pointless as you need the goalie.

No it has never happened, but a goalie was once hit in the neck with a players skate cutting his artery and almost making him die. A fan from the stands rushed down to help and lost almost 1 qt. of blood. As this occured the blood pressure slowed down causing his heart to beat very fast in order to recover for the blood being lost. It is now required in the NHL for a goalie to have a neck guard(Part that hangs over goalies mask. See the difference!(The 1st mask is a modern day goalie mask! By the way I am an Avalanche fan!
