On July 22, 2007 first base coach for the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League, Mike Coolbaugh, was struck in the neck by a line drive while he was standing in the first base coaches box. The impact destroyed his left vertebral artery which caused a brain hemorrage. He was treated immediately and rushed to a hospital but he passed away less than an hour after being struck. I have seen some very serious injuries due to line drive foul balls that caused the medics to take people straight to the emergency room. I am not sure whether anybody has died or not, but I would have to guess at least once somebody died somewhere. It only takes a good hit to the temple to do it.

Julio Franco (Cleveland Indians) one time hit a line drive right to the pitcher's face and almost killed him, but luckily he didn't die.

What happens if a ball hits the pitching rubber directly from a bat and then goes into foul territory without otherwise touching the ground?

MLB Rule 2.00 concerning the definition of a foul ball, found below, states that the ball would be considered foul: " A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.A foul fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the infielder is on foul or fair territory at the time he touches the ball.Rule 2.00 (Foul Ball) Comment: A batted ball not touched by a fielder, which hits the pitcher's rubber and rebounds into foul territory, between home and first, or between home and third base is a foul ball. "

What is a foul in baseball?

Unlike other sports, like football, soccer, or basketball, a foul in baseball has nothing to do with the player. It has to do with the batted ball. If the ball, when hit, lands outside of the dimensions of "fair territory," it's a foul ball. Here is an excerpt from the MLB rulebook"A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and firstbase, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the naturalground.A foul fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foulline, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the infielder is on foul or fair territory at the time he touches the ball.Rule 2.00 (Foul Ball) Comment: A batted ball not touched by a fielder, which hits the pitcher's rubber and rebounds into foul territory, between home and first, or between home and third base is a foul ball.FOUL TERRITORY is that part of the playing field outside the first and third baselines extended to the fence and perpendicularly upwards.A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher'shands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play. It is not a catch if it is a rebound, unless the ball has first touched the catcher's glove or hand. For more baseball rules and links to baseball and softball rules see:http://www.hitpitchcatch.com/baseball-rules-softball-rules.html#MLBBaseball

Why are balls called balls when referring to balls and strikes?

A "strike" is a "fair ball" -- one that passed through the strike zone. A "foul ball" is one that passed outside of the strike zone. "Foul" is also used to refer to a ball that hits the batter. Baseball commentators got into the habit of saying "ball!" instead of "foul ball" to avoid a lengthy explanation of exactly what happened.

What are the rules in baseball?

1 rule is if the ball is not fully over the foul line it is not a out or a foul no matter how big or small the ball is if the ball touched anything else it does not cout if another player is on the feild sitting and it touched them it still counts

If a player is dribbling the ball and gets fouled then he commits a technical foul what happens?

The opposing team shoots the technical foul free throw, then the player does whatever he would have done after he was fouled - either inbound the ball, or if the opposing team is in the penalty, shoot two free throws. Committing a technical foul does not nullify or offset the original foul.

In basketball, what is a 'loose ball foul'?

A "loose ball foul" is when someone is trying to get a rebound (they can be on offence or defense), and a person pushes someone out of their way, or forces them trip, to get the ball. If a loose ball is called on someone on Team A, Team B will automatically get the ball.

What is the difference between fair ball from foul ball?

The markings on the field has a foul line. This is by the running paths by 1st and 3rd. Any ball that lands in between the foul line is a fair ball. Any ball that lands out the foul line is a foul. When ball rolls on the infield and goes out the foul territory will be called foul. But when ball lands on the outfield and rolls to foul territory is a live ball

If a high fly ball is foul and 1st baseman tries to catch it and the ball hits the tip of his glove and bounces off his glove and goes into fair territory is it fair or foul?

It's still foul cause the ball was hit in foul territory. Whether a ball is fair or foul is based on the position of the ball when it is touched. Since the ball was touched when the ball was in foul territory, it would be a foul ball.

Is the batter out if he inadvertently make contact with a slow rolling ball in foul territory?

If the ball is in fair territory, the fact that the fielder is standing in foul territory does NOT make the ball foul. the same as if a ball is foul, the fielder standing in fair territory doesn't make the ball fair.
