The ball is fed in to the "tunnel" by the scum half. It is the job of the loosehead prop (who is on the same side as the scrumhalf putting the ball in) will step forward on the attacking push . Their left foot is employed to stop the ball being pushed back out of the scum. The hooker (no 2) is employed to "hook" the ball with their feet (no hands are allowed in a scrum to touch the ball else is penalty is awarded against the offender) The ball having been hooked is in effect back heeled to the feet of the second row who then will move it with their feet to those of the number 8. This is the ideal scenario. However, it is not unusual for the feet of all the Front Row to be employed in retrieving the ball and for the flankers to channel back to the number 8. The back rows job is to protect the ball and the scrum half and allow the effective delivery to the half backs

A scrum is used for restarting play after some form of infringement during gameplay. Depending on the league rules, 6 (or 8) players from each team will compete for the ball. After the ball is put into the tunnel, each team attempts to move the pack and gain control of the play.

The new laws (part of which are the original laws anyway) for 2017 - 2018 season Rugby Union

The put-in

The scrum-half must put the ball in straight to the scrum, but they are allowed to align their shoulder to the middle line of the scrum.

This means they are putting the ball in a shoulder's width towards their own team's side of the scrum.

So the ball has to be put in straight, but rather than being put in down the middle of the tunnel it is put in slightly towards the scrum-half's own team.

The referee no longer signals when the scrum-half should put the ball in.

The aim is to promote a fair contest for possession while also giving an advantage to the team putting the ball into the scrum. In most cases the opposition will have infringed for that team to be awarded the put-in.

The strike

A front-row player must strike the ball once it is put into the tunnel.

This is traditionally done by the hooker as they are in the best position to strike the ball but either prop is also permitted to do this.

This means the ball cannot be fed straight to the second row, as had previously been happening.

The aim is to promote a fair contest for possession.

If teams don't strike the ball, the opposition will be awarded a free-kick.

Handling

The No 8 is allowed to pick up the ball from the second row.

Previously teams had to wait until the ball came through to the back row but the No 8 is now permitted to collect it from the second row.

The aim is to promote continuity and speed up play.

What options are open to a referee in rugby if the ball does not travel 10 yards in the kick off?

He must move the ball back to the Kick Point and there will be a scrum to the people receiving the kick. Or if the other team does get the ball then there will be an advantage to them for an undetermind amount of time. In a scrum if the opposite team has won a scrum can you go to the back of the ball one foot in front of the ball if one is behind in between each side thanks?

No, not to my knowledge. I would do is stay level and close to the 8th man but try and get my hands as near to the scrumhalf as possible. Then when he touches it, tackle him! When the opposing team takes a strike to the head( term meaning that the opposing team has used they feet to pull the ball out of the tunnel back to the side) the ball cannot be touched by a hand until it reaches the feet of the number either who can pick it up, or retain it as protected. the scrum half who puts the ball in CANNOT pass the back feet of the last player in the opposing scrum (the no 8) until either the No 8 passes the ball out to his own scrum half or they pick it up. ALL 8 players from each side must stay bound (correctly in contact with the scrum players) until the ball is played out. If a player breaks that bind they must retreat to 5 meters behind ( in line with their own back) A scum half nor anyother opposing player can pass the feet of the opposing scrums last feet or they are off side. and a penalty is awarded.

Who puts the ball into a scrum in rugby?

This is a Scrum or Scrummage. The scrum half (number nine in Union) throws the ball in to the tunnel formed by the two front rows. To do this the Scrum Half stands adjacent to their open side prop forward. This is the one who has one side of his head (the left side) not in contact with the opposing prop forward. The ball must pass the feet of the open side prop before the ball can be hooked back by a front row player. No hand may touch the ball . The 2 sides endeavour to push the other off the ball so that they can win possession To learn more about rugby rules look on the IRB website - it has a wealth of information.

What are steps to play rugby union?

It took me years of playing to develop a proper understanding of Rugby Union. There are many, many rules in the game, but I'll just tell you the basic ones. Basically, the team is divided into two parts; the forwards, usually being bigger and bulkier men, and the backs, usually being more agile, fast and fitter men. After getting tackled by the opposition, you must immediately drop to the ground, let go of the ball, and leave it. The forwards will ruck over the ball to try and gain, or keep possession of the ball. The opposing team can also ruck over and gain possession of the ball. Nor the opposing or defending team can come in from the side, take the ball, and run away. The ball must be fed to the rear of the ruck as soon and carefully as possible, and given to the scrum half. The scrum half will then pick up the ball, and either choose to give it to a forward or a back. If the team is being pushed back into their own try line, the scrum half will likely make the decision to give it to one of the backs, to kick. It is good to kick because there is a risk that the opposing team will gain possession of the ball, either through rucking, mauling, interception, or penalties, and score a try. If the ball is kicked to the other side of the field, it lowers the risk of an easy try by the opposing team. For the most part, the ball will be given to the forwards. The forwards will definitely make good distance, through repetitively running and being tackled. Throughout the game, it is highly likely that penalties will occur. For example, if a player drops the ball and it lands in front of them, it is called a knock on. In Rugby Union, the referee will usually call a scrum. All of the forwards from both teams bind in against each other in specific positions. The two teams must not engage in contact just yet, though. Once all of the players are in position, and have binded together, the referee will call, in order, "Crouch - Touch - Pause - Engage". On engage, the two teams will push against each other. The scrum half of the team who has the penalty will feed the ball into the middle of the scrum, in between both the teams. The hooker (the position that I play) must raise his foot and try to hook the ball, to get it to the back of the scrum. The other players in the scrum now have to transport the ball with their feet to the back of the scrum. The hooker must concentrate on winning the ball, whilst the rest of the players must concentrate on using the strength of their legs and upper body to move over the ball. There is much more to rugby, and it will take you years to properly understand it. I have been playing rugby union for 8 years now and I am still asking questions. It is a great game but requires strength, fitness and agility. You have to be prepared for injuries, as it is a rough game. Luckily, I haven't really been injured my whole time playing.
