Karate came to the US about the same time as it came to Japan, in the early 1930's. Hawaii was the first place in the US that 'Gijin' saw what is known as karate demonstrations. It became much more popular as Soldiers that had become interested in it while stationed on Okinawa and in Japan learned it and brought it back. Judo was here in earlier. The first recorded karate classes in the US where held in Hawaii in the 1930's.
