When most people think of the biggest trade in NFL History the Hershel Walker to Minnesota trade, in which a total of 18 players moved across the boards, pops into their head. However, Minnesota received more than a single player from Dallas in that deal (Walker & a 1990 5th round pick; Dallas received RB Darrin Nelson from Minnesota in the Walker deal, traded Neson to San Diego for a 5th round pick in 1990, which it sent back to Minnesota.)

For a single player there were two trades in NFL History that stand apart. The Ollie Matson trade of 1959 and the Eric Dickerson trade of 1987. The record for most players traded for a single NFL player stands at 9 for 1.

In 1959 The Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) traded Hall of Fame RB Ollie Matson to the Los Angeles Rams. In return the Cardinals received 9 players. the breakdown:

LA Rams receive:

  • RB Ollie Matson

Chicago Cardinals receive:

  • T Frank Fuller
  • T Ken Panfil
  • DE Glen Holtzman
  • DE John Tracy
  • DT Art Hauser
  • FB Larry Hickman
  • RB Don Brown,
  • 1960 2nd round pick (Mike McGee, G, Duke, 14th overall)
  • Player to be named during the 1959 training camp (1960 4th round pick: Silas Woods, E, Marquette, 38th overall).

The Eric Dickerson trade in 1987 involved three teams. The Colts wanted Dickerson and managed to work the deal by bringing Buffalo on board to help out. The break down:

Indianapolis Colts receive:

  • RB Eric Dickerson (from Los Angeles Rams)

Buffalo Bills receive:

Los Angeles Rams receive:

  • RB Owen Gill (from Indianapolis)
  • 1st & 2nd Round Picks 1988 (from Indianapolis)
  • 2nd Round Pick 1989 (from Indianapolis)
  • RB Greg Bell (from Buffalo)
  • 1st round Pick 1988 (from Buffalo)
  • 1st & 2nd round pick 1989 (from Buffalo)

Can a baseball player be traded when they do not want to?

In MLB, that would depend on the player's contract, how long the player has been in the league and how long the player has played with the team that is trying to trade him. A player can negotiate a no trade clause in his contract which would not allow the team to trade him. Of course, the player could choose to waive the no trade clause, usually for compensation from his team, which would allow him to be traded. Any player who has been in MLB for ten full seasons and played with his current team for five full seasons may not be traded without his consent. You might hear these players being referred to as 'ten five' players. If a player does not have a no trade clause in his contract or is not a 'ten five' player, he made be traded without his permission.

John Unitas was traded to the Chargers on January 22, 1973 for what was called 'future considerations'. History did not record what those 'future considerations' were.Joe Thomas, Colts' GM at the time, was quoted as saying "No other players or draft choices were involved in the agreement.".

Who is the most traded major league player in the history of baseball?

I don't think this is the record for straight up trades, (he was only actually traded 5 times) but between trades, and being released repeatedly, Bobo Newsom has quite a rap sheet, with 23 transactions over the course of his 20-season career. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/newsobo01.shtml#trans

What is the record for most players traded for a single player in any sport?

The most players traded for a single player that I know of is 11 and occurred in 1952 when the Dallas Texans (NFL) traded the rights to 1st round draft choice LB Les Richter to the Los Angeles Rams for RB Dick Hoerner, DB Tom Keane, DB George Sims, C Joe Reid, HB Billy Baggett, T Jack Halliday, FB Dick McKissack, LB Vic Vasicek, E Richard Wilkins, C Aubrey Phillips, and RB Dave Anderson. Richter played nine seasons for the Rams and did not miss a single game. Keane, Wilkens, Hoerner, Reid, McKissack, and Baggett played for the Texans in 1952. The Texans team folded following the season and the NFL awarded the franchise to Carroll Rosenbloom who used the players from the Texans to help start the Baltimore Colts.

What is a no trade clause in baseball?

A 'no trade clause' is a section in a player's contract that specifies the player cannot be traded to another team or specifies the teams that a player can be traded to. Some players have in their contracts that they cannot be traded. This means the player will play the entire length of the contract for that team. Some players have in their contracts that they may be traded only to certain teams. For example, a player may say he can only be traded to the Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox but to no other team.
