No, there is not much evidence that hockey goes back that far, although some historians believe competitive games were played on ice in ancient Rome and ancient Greece, and in Ireland, a popular sport called hurling (which has similarities to hockey) was being played in the 7th century, in what is today Ireland. However, there is considerable debate among historians about when the modern game of hockey really was created. Some sources claim it goes back to the period of 1796-1800, at King's College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. But other sources say it was later than that-- the mid-1800s: a British source even asserts that hockey is British, not Canadian-- supposedly hockey got its start around 1853-- and one of the first to play it was the philosopher Charles Darwin.
