There are several styles of skiing, Downhill; Ski skating; Nordic; Cross country. Each is different from the others.
Snowboarding is a refined development of glissading - which old time mountaineers used.
Glissading is a method of controlled sliding down a snow slope, starting with the feet horizontal, and the sole of the boot likewise. Ones body will be in a slight crouch, and the ice-axe will provide a 3rd support. The more the soles become parallel to the slope, the faster one proceeds, and the more the foot points downhill, the faster again. Only useful on slightly soft snow, and a disaster on ice or sastrugi. Just like snowboarding.

I broke my Thumb snowboarding. That and wrists can be typical injuries of snow boarding. On a snow board your two options are to fall face first or back first. If you fall back first you have a tendency to put your hand out. Try it....what will hit the ground first? Your thumb. I actually snapped the tendon from the bone. Cost $2500 in surgery to get it fixed and that was mine after insurance. The wrists are next to take the punishment. In my opinion snowboarding can be more dangerous but I still do it. I switch from skiing after 7 years or so to snow boarding. It was a hard change and I almost gave up several times. I would say leg injuries occur more in skiing.
