You don't have to attend college in order to play soccer. However, you have a better chance of being drafted if you go to college. It makes more sense and you'll have a better education. Granited something happens and you can't play anymore.
------
Large well known soccer clubs like Manchester United, AC Milan employ "scouts". These are people who have a good knowledge of the game and travel around watching amateur plays in action, identifying those who play for the school or community. They report back findings of "potential". The person and their immediately family is then informed of this and a representative of the club concerned will attend a match to watch the player. If the player has shown skill's and potential they are normally invited to "trial". This is at a venue , normally the club itself and a game is played to establish the best potential.
If success full the player will be signed in to a junior contract. This stops other teams head-hunting them. The Club will also arrange when its appropriate to do so to bring the player in to a football academy. here their skills are developed and games against other clubs are arranged. There is also a opportunity for international appearances as their age group.
If the player is to live at the club they are expected to continue their education. This is undertaken just in-case the player has their soccer career terminated. Players like David Beckham have been passed through this process
