I'm a college student working on my major in standard English. After I graduate I will go back for a Doctors Degree. Anyway, the MYTH is that a man named Phillipidies ran 26 miles from the Marathon Plains in Greece to Athens. However, this is not true. When I was young I loved history and geography. The direct answer is Spartan leader, Leonidas sent some of the warriors to get some armor from Athens and while they were doing this they were being chased by Persians, so basically about 9,000 warriors ran to and fro Athens back to Marathon......
P.S. when I said "fro", I didn't mean from, I meant fro, and at the time of the run that the 9,000 warriors made, Phillipidies was already dead.
It is exactly 26.218 miles or 42,195 meters.
During the Battle of Marathon in Athens Greece, an Athenian messenger boy called Pheidippides ran 26 miles to announce to the rest of Athens the victory they achieved. The Athenians defeated a larger Persian force at the location of Marathon. At the end of the messenger Pheidippides run he dropped dead from exhaustion. Today these long runs called "Marathons" held at places like New York include a distance of 26 miles.
On September 26, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson had a heart attack. On September 26, 1934, the British launched the Queen Mary, and on September 26, 1948, the Boston Braves won their first National League Championship since 1914.

Marathon... No Joke
He ran 26 miles to tell of the greek victory at Marathon. What actually happend was he ran the s 26 miles, to Athens i believe, then shouted Nike!! which means victory, then died on the spot.
I assume you mean the person who ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory won there by the Greeks. His name according to Herodotus was Pheidippides.
Marathon
100metres The very first one from the Battle of Marathon to Athens was 26 miles 365 feet. The guy that ran it ran that, got to athens, said "We won!" and died ^^
Pheidippides died after running 140 from Athens to Sparta to inform them that the Persians had invaded Greece. He later ran an additional 26 miles after which he died from exhaustion.
I will tell you something it was not Sparticus or Pheippides
The Athenian army of 9000 warriors. After defeating the Persian infantry they ran back to Athens 26 miles away to defend it against the Persian cavalry which was being rowed around the coast to take the city in their absence, with the gates opened by traitors within.
He delivered the message and then promptly collapsed and died on the spot due to fatigue.
Pheidippides was the fastest Athenian messenger. His story inspired the beginning of marathon running, even thought after he ran 26 miles to Athens he pronounced victory and then dropped dead.
marathons are 26 miles long because as legend has it, after the athenian warriors held off a Persian invasion at the city of marathon in ancient Greece. A messenger ran from marathon to Athens to let the people know the news. It was apparently 26 miles some say 40,000 metres. still a long bloody way!any how the guy arrived at Athens and apparently dropped dead from exaustion. I guess the st.johns ambulance were off that day!
no idea name but it was to do with a battle between Greeks and Persians at Marathon. he ran 26 miles got into city walls shouted Nike and died. (victory) that's why we call 26 miles a Marathon
