Swimming wasnt discovered like other things. People have been doing it since the dawn of man. They would just go in a lake or stream...and jsut swim. Racing in swimming hadnt officially started until they started doing it in england.

Probably early in the development of mankind as a species. Many mammals can swim, so early man looked at how other animals swam and copied that. When exactly this happened is not documented so we don't know, but it must have been tens of thousands of years ago.
