There are four types of strokes.
1. The most common stroke which is freestyle. This is on your front and alternating one arm in a windmill like motion to move forward. This is also the fastes stroke
2.the backstroke is the same as the freestyle but it is just on your back. In an official race you are not allowed on the stomach at all except for the flipturn at the wall.
3. The third is the breaststroke. This is a harder one to describe but in a streamline position the hands come down to the chest and recover back to a streamline position and the kick for this stroke is like a frog kick. Crunch the knees put your legs out and straighten them back together.
4. The fourth is the butterfly. Similar tote freestyle but both arms move at the same time instead of alternating. And the legs always stay together it is a "dolphin" kick. Not a flutter kick like the freestyle
