Intramural sports or intramurals are recreational sports organized within a set geographic area. The term derives from the Latin words intra muros meaning within walls, and was used to indicate sports matches and contests that took place among teams from "within the walls" of an ancient city (as opposed to a varsity team which competed with teams from other cities and towns). Today, "intramural" tournaments are still organized within a specific community or municipal area, between teams of equivalent age or athletic ability. For example, intramural sports programs are often organized on college campuses to promote competition and fun among the students. As for "extramural" or varsity games, these would be played by teams from different geographic regions or towns. Even Olympic sports would be considered "extramural" sports. Thus any sport can be intramural as it does not depend on the sport being played it simply depends on where the competitors come from

Yes, as a swimmer I can say that it's a competitive sport. Swimming is a competitive sport due to all of the things that one has to do when in the sport. Well, first of all, the people that are swimming (up to eight at a time), have to try and beat all of the other people that are in the water at the same time. The swimmers can either swin individually, or they are able to swim in a realy team of a team of four people. The individual events include: Freestyle (50m, 100m, 200m, 500m, and the long Free 1500m), Butterfly (same ones), I.M. (Individual medly, in the order Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle) (100m, 200m), the Backstroke, and the Breaststroke. Then there is the Mens' and Womens' Relays, which include: the Medly and the different stroke relays. The highest meter that relays can make it to is 1500, a relay is a team of four swimmers. And, yes, it's an Olympic sport. So, this makes the swimming sport a competitive sport. When someone swims in the summer, they compete for ribbons, and also in year-round. In the Olympics, of course, you compete for the patent gold, silver, and bronze medals that EVERYONE'S trying to get why they are swimming there.
