Swimming is great for toning muscle and keeping your heart healthy! It can be very good if you have poor joints, bones or low muscle mass as you 'weigh' less in water (bouyancy makes it easier) and walking in water is three times as good for you as walking normally in calories burned and muscle mass improvement.
It is also good because you can never be too old or too unhealthy to start.. whereas running can be difficult to begin!
