The question, which is the oldest Canadian Football League team, is definitely open to controversy. The Toronto Argonauts were formed in 1873. (The Argos claim to be the winningest Grey Cup team with 15 victories against six defeats.) But the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, although not formed until 1950, also have a claim to be the oldest team, and they also have a claim to be tied as the winningest Grey Cup team. The Ti-Cats are an amalgamation of two Hamilton area teams: Hamilton Tigers and Hamilton Wildcats (sometimes called the Flying Wildcats). Although relative latecomers on the football scene, nevertheless the Wildcats appeared in two Grey Cup Games during the 40s, winning one of them. The Tigers, however, can trace their existence back to 1869. The Tigers appeared in seven Grey Cup Games, winning five. The Tigers were also an amalgamation. There was a Hamilton-based team called the Alerts, themselves winners of two national championships (only one of which truly counts as a "Grey Cup" championship, the other having occurred the year before the Grey Cup was presented). The Alerts merged with the Tigers some time around 1914. The Grey Cups won by the Alerts (1), Tigers (5) and Wildcats (1) are not officially counted toward the number of Tiger-Cat victories. Since the 1950 merger, the Tabbies have appeared in the Grey Cup Game 18 times, winning 8. In law, it has been said that when an amalgamation occurs, the amalgamating bodies continue to exist within the amalgamated organization. By comparison, the oldest NFL team, the Cardinals, were not formed until 1898. Originally the Morgan Athletic Club, the Cardinals have also been known as the Racine Normals, the Racine Cardinals, the Chicago Cardinals, the Card-Pitt team (a temporary merger with the Steelers for the 1944 season), the St Louis Cardinals, the Phoenix Cardinals, and now as the Arizona Cardinals.
