How did the Arizona Cardinals get their nickname?

Arizona Cardinals was originally formed in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago. The club was then called the Racine Normals since they were originally located in Normal Park on Chicago's Racine Avenue (not Racine, Wisconsin, as some think). In 1901, owner Chris O'Brien bought used maroon uniforms from the University of Chicago's team, the 'Maroons' the colors by then had faded, leading O'Brien to exclaim, "That's not maroon, it's cardinal red!" It was then that the team changed its name to the Racine Cardinals.
