From the research I've done, there is no definitive date as to when the first Footballer was paid. Best answer was Footballers started collecting money for playing sometime in the 1870's. Players would often switch from team to team enticed by higher wage offers or a one time fee for them to play on Cup bound teams. The Professional Footballers Association came along in 1907 and set up a structured wage for the players, so this could be considered their first "Regular Pay".

In comparison to American football players and soccer players they certainly are not over paid but for the top players its considered that they may be under paid
It has to be remembered that until recently (2003) Union players were not paid at all. The female game is developing and the gate money is increasing as is the sponsorship.

I'm afraid that women rugby players do not get paid, therefore they are not professional as it seems they do not command a large enough audience. They are allowed to claim expenses but must do it for the love of the game & country.
