Im not sure when it officialy became a sport. it used to be a fightiong technique. Indians would take rocks and put them in their versions of Lacrosse sticks and hit there enemy with them. I"m guessing after "white man" discovered it, we began to use there war technique for recreational purpose which over the years became a sport

The first college lacrosse game was in 1877 (not ncaa yet). The first NCAA sponsored lacrosse tournament was in 1971.
