The first original first 8 AFL teams were Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda. Later Richmond and University entered and then North Melbourne and Hawthorn

AFL, meaning Australian Football, started in 1990 ... basically, however, the former state league, the VFL, administered it. So all the original VFL teams were assumed. It also had the added distinction of one or two teams from other states, like the Sydney Swans, for instance.

The 8 AFL teams were the Boston Patriots(now the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills, the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee titans), the New York Titans (now the New York Jets), the Dallas Texans (now the Dallas Cowboys), the Denver Broncos, the L.A Chargers (now the San Diego Chargers), and the Oakland Raiders.

In 1990 the 14 existing VFL teams all became AFL teams. The oldest of the VFL/AFL teams is Melbourne which was founded in 1859.
