A "hit" in hockey is when a player runs into, or otherwise impedes the progress of a player that has or had possession of the puck (within three seconds). A hit or "check" does not count if the player performing the check commits a penalty while doing so.

A hit is another name for a body check. This is when a defensive player literally hits, or skates into, the offensive player in possession of the puck.
