A post is a player that is either defending or taking the space in the post area. Most post players are big ones like Power Forwards and Centers. But on the contrary, any player that knows how to take the post area or performs the correct post moves can be the post player.

Guards are typically smaller players, good at ball handling and often outside shooting. Guards should also be good passers.

Posts are generally larger players, whose main responsibilities are rebounding and making baskets close to the rim. They are often good shot blockers.

You are in the post when you are close to the basket, so you'll mostly see Centers and Power Forwards in the post.

Posting up, by the way, means pushing the defender backward with your back and getting closer to the basket with that.
