  • If someone is running with it, the football goes as fast as the ball carrier goes. If the ball carrier is running 10 mph, the ball is also moving at that speed relative to the ground. I don't know how fast place kicks and punts go.
  • The strongest quarter-backs in the league (Ben Roethlisberger, Brett Favre, Tom Brady, etc.) usually throw the ball at 80+ MPH.

Whoever answered this question is either just guessing or a jerk trying to answer wrong. 5mph is a brisk walk. The average NFL player runs the 40-meter sprint in less than 5 seconds.

A combination of the two would be ideal. If you are a defender strength is essential, this means you will be able to get on the end of the ball and edge out opposing players. If you are a midfielder speed and moderate strength is needed to be able to move up the pitch and get crosses in. If you are an attacker pace is essential, as you can run onto loose balls and get past defenders and try and score.
