The cornerback, or defensive corner linebacker has several assignments. First, to defend against the run; "end runs" "sweeps" other running plays that involve the outside areas of the line. Then, to defend against passing plays; again, "outside" ones, and, if necessary, "deep," if the pass receiver he's assigned to cover keeps going, deep. An unusual mixture of assets, skills, are required for this position: Toughness, hard-hitting ability, speed, decent height (pass defense) and weight, intelligence, in one package.
You could be a running back or a defensive back, usually the shorter players play those positions in football.
