The word 'sport' usually refers to a game involving bodily motion and competition played by individuals or teams in a defined open-air or enclosed space. The word can be used in the singular or plural to mean such games collectively. The word can also be used to describe outdoor recreational pursuits such as hunting or fishing. Broadly speaking, the word can be used to refer to any form of recreation. In a society where the type of work people usually do for a living is sedentary and physically undemanding, sports are an excellent form of active leisure in which to build muscle and self-confidence. Sports are also highly educational diversions that teach valuable lessons on life. They teach care for one's body, hard work and commitment to a goal, teamwork, fair play, obedience to rules, and courage. Viewed in this light, coaches are the teachers and athletes are the students of the game they are playing. Most academic institutions have physical education courses as well as intramural and interscholastic athletic programs that students can take part in. The increase in leisure time in the past century has turned sports into a bustling industry employing a great number of people with athletes earning millions of dollars from playing the games they grew up with and love. Many sports are played in front of spectators in public buildings designed like theaters such as arenas, stadiums, and racetracks.
A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. Activities such as card gamesand Board Games, are classified as "mind sports" and some are recognized as Olympic sports, requiring primarily mental skills and mental physical involvement. Non-competitive activities, for example as jogging or playing catch are usually classified as forms of recreation.
