Depending on the league, a hockey team can dress anywhere from 18-22 players per game. Of that number, six are on the ice at any one time, usually one goalie, two defensemen and three forwards. Unlike other team sports, such as soccer, hockey allows for unlimited substitutions, most times "on the fly" as action continues. There are times during a game when a team is assessed penalties that it may have to play for periods of time with only five, or even, four players.
