I dont think there is a rule to how close you have to be to take a shot. Depending on your skill as a shooter, you can shoot from wherever is most comfortable for you. I suggest anywhere from the 12 meter and closer for an intermediate player.

hold the bottom of the stick, put your other hand up the distance from ur elbow to the start of your fingers, bring the stick over your shoulder, keep your front elbow up, and make a throwing motion

yeah its a contact sport. look up some videos on YouTube to see the hits. you can hit with your stick and also your body.
