Yes, depending on how long the ball is in the water. It will slowly damage the leather and mess up the seams. It's a better idea to keep it in a dry place. :)

wash i cold water and DO NOT DRY!!! Spread pants on table or flat surface.
Wash the leather football with warm soapy water. Dry with a cloth. Then rub well in with a leather preservative to prevent the leather from hardening or absorbing water- use dubbin or saddle-soap.
Take a towel moist with water and a little soap, wipe down, rinse, and dry with a clean towel.
