When Bill Parcells stepped down as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in early 2007, owner Jerry Jones decided to hire a replacement who could work with the 3-4 defense that Parcells had installed. Wade Phillips won the Dallas job because he had dealt with the 3-4 during his many years as an NFL head coach and defensive coordinator.
