You take the football and make sure your holding the laces correctly which is having at least two or more fingers between the laces and pointing to your target with the speed you want it to go. When you throw the ball let your fingers roll of the laces. It takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, it will become easier and easier.

Another way is space your hands out on the laces as much as you can and flick your wrist. It will feel very weird at first, but then you will find out it works very well!

When you throw a football, you should grasp the ball in the palm of your hand, with your thumb on one side and your fingers spread, but fingertips touching the laces of the ball, on the other. Pull your arm back until the football is near your ear. As you move your arm forward in a throwing motion, gently pull down on the laces to send the ball off your fingers in a spiraling, spinning motion. This motion gives the ball a fast spiraling motion, sending it firmly through the air toward the receiver.

Which should you do first when you throw a football?

  • Hold the ball in the palm of your hand.
  • Spread your fingertips along the laces of the ball.
  • move your arm back until the ball is near your ear.
  • Pull gently downward on the laces of the ball.

Throwing a football isn't easy and takes allot of practice on your own or with a friend/coach. How you could throw the football depends on how long time you have been throwing a football. Allot of young quarterbacks throw the ball by sliding their hand under the ball, they do this because their hands are to small to throw the football properly. This method could create a nice spiral, but however it's the wrong way! Why is it wrong? Well if you slide your hand under the ball you will get almost no power at all. So if your hand are really small or you if you haven't thrown a football very long time this is a common way to throw the football.

Now how to throw the football properly.

At first i would like to say that nobody can tell you exactly how to throw the football properly, we can only give you guidelines.

The grip

Many coaches tell their QB's to find their grip first, I don't agree with that because I have changed my grip many times, so my tip is, throw throw and throw until you have a grip that feels comfortable (but test new grips to see witch grip that feels the best).

Throwing motion

Try keeping your wrist straight at all time though the motion. Start the motion by taking a step with your left foot (for a right handed player) against your target and at the same time you should take your throwing arm 90 degrees and back (so your little finger is pointing backwards). As I said before always keep your wrist straight through the motion. While going into the throw keep your arm high, above your shoulder is a good measurement. Finally your follow through, when you are about to release the ball (always above you shoulder with you wrist straight) turn your hand so that you index finger is the last finger to touch the ball. If you have done this correctly, your hand should naturally go down to you left pocket (for a right handed player) and you should result in a perfect spiral.

It is all about throw mechanics. You have to learn how to hold the football. The way that one holds a football is very important to how the ball will move through the air. You want to grab more towards the back end of the ball rather than the middle. Now I'm not saying to grab the very back of the football, but have your hand positioned further back on the ball than towards the middle. Next is to work on the actual motion of throwing the ball. The people who throw the ball the furthest don't necessarily have to be the strongest. A good throw uses the entire body to propel the ball rather than just arm muscles. If one throws the ball just using arm muscles, you will be open to some pretty severe injury. You can tear muscles and ligaments this way. If you are a righty, you want to stand sideways with your left leg in front of you. Stand tall and straight.Cock your arm back and drive forward with your back foot ( your right one ). A perfect release is when the ball is just passing your head. The release of the ball will determine if the ball will wobble or be a perfect spiral. This takes practice, do not expect to be a professional quarter back in a day. Watch Tom Brady throw a football and study his mechanics. Pay attention to everything from the way he holds the ball to how he stands, and when he releases the ball. That is the text book way to throw a football. Mechanically perfect!

Put your pinky, ring finger, and middle finger on the back half on the laces to grip, flick your wrist a little when you throw to spin it
