At present I do not know of any professional women's leagues. There are many women's leagues around the country but they would not be considered professional. There was a professional women's league in the United States that was in existence between 1943-1954 and was called the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. If you click on the 'All-American Girls Professional Baseball League' link on this page you can read about the history of women's professional baseball.

Professional? Yes, there are women who get paid to play, but not in the Major Leagues, i.e. for the Yankees, et al. which is probably what you meant.

The first woman to play professional baseball (in recent memory) was Ila Borders with the Saint Paul Saints of the 1997 Northern League. She played professionally for 4 seasons in the independent professional leagues. Here is her bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ila_Borders

As of now there is no rule stating that women cannot play in MLB or MiLB (MLB minor league affiliate teams). In fact, there have been several women who have made it into the MiLB) One such player, Jackie Mitchell, playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 1931 pitched against the New York Yankees in an exhibition game and struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and others in succession. As for why there are none currently playing in the MLB or MiLB, the answer is simple: there aren't any good enough. Given the business side of baseball, if a team found an 'Alberta Pujols' (Albert Pujols is one of the game's best hitters) the fact that she is a woman would only add to her attractiveness as a player. The most likely reason for the difference in ability is that Little League softball has become a much bigger thing than in the past, and girls are pushed (suggested might be a better word) into softball rather than baseball.

No

Yes, actually a woman did play Major League Baseball. Her name was Virnett Jackie Mitchell. She was 17 at the time and only pitched in one major game that was against the New York Yankees. She struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Many will think I am making this up but ESPN and the History Channel both did segments on her and a link is following as proof. This was an exhibition game not a regular season game.
