I used to run cross country and my coach's would tell me to load up on carbohydrates. Since endurance athletes will be moving for a long time without rest, they need the carbs which will turn to sugar slowly to basically feed their muscles. For a power athlete, I'd say they'd eat a lot of protein to help build their muscles. When you build muscle for power, you're actually tearing the muscle tissue and the protein rich diet will basically help fill in those tears and make the muscles bigger.

A sound diet is important to sports performance because it keeps homeostasis. A body that is struggling to maintain its energy levels cannot adapt adequate to training. In addition, weight gain or weight loss can impact performance by reduce relative strength/power/endurance or by decreasing absolute strength/power/endurance respectively.

The power to weight ratio is the power generated divided by the person's body weight. It benefits athletes because the greater the PWR is, the less physical effort the athlete has to do to achieve a goal. Endurance athletes, such as mounain bikers, tiatheletes, etc. will benefit from a greater PWR.
