The best lighting for a dartboard can be achieved by placing a fluorescent light directly above the board and by placing a spotlight in front and above the board at the same time. The florescent light will cast consistent light down the front of the board and you'll get the directional spotlight on the front which should remove any shadows from the board while the darts are in it. The goal is to have a well lit board to aim at and to be able to see where your darts have landed at all times without having to shift your stance.
