Your injury definitely needs to be treated by a doctor. If you have split your shin open, you will need to be evaluated to see if you need stitches. If the injury goes untreated, you could experience infection that could be life threatening.
Shin splints are usually caused by the dog not getting enough exercise. Try walking the dog on the regular or running with the dog.
Generally, shin splints are caused by running or jumping. It could be caused by the running too much or jumping too much.
Shin splints are a painful condition which causes your shins to hurt when jogging or running. It is most often caused by overuse which causes irritation of the muscles. It can take up to 3 to 6 months for them to heal.
Some of the causes of shin pain due to running is caused by the constant impact associated with running. Sharp stabbing pain is one of the main symptoms that you will experience if you have this condition.
You must ice the shins down. Pack in ice until the pain of the cold diminishes. Remove the ice until normal feeling returns, and repeat. Do this once or twice a day until the pain of the shin splints is gone. You will find that ice can do miracles. Shin splints result from the pointing of the toe under weight, as in running, or jumping, as soft tissue behind the shin separates from bone. Swelling results, and actually causes further damage. Ice stops the swelling, and once the ice is removed, allows healing to begin. If possible, minimize or halt the activity that is causing the injury. Icing works best when applied immediately, or as soon as possible after the injury is incurred. Never apply heat, until all your shin pain and swelling has passed. Only then will heat facilitate healing. Experienced layman.
I have experience with shin splits, the best thing to do is take little dixie cups and fill them with water and then freeze them. Once theyre frozen peel off the cup a layer at a time as you rub the ice on your shins. Do it after every workout.
