Skateboarding became popular in Southern California in the 1970's. With more kids living in homes where both parents worked, they found they had more leeway to skating in empty Swimming Pools, which were used as ramps, during the winter months without getting into trouble. The recreational sport became a national trend with the popularity of Dogtown and Z-Boys.
