Skateboarfing never was very popular. Skateboarding on the other hand is fairly popular now, the total number of skateboarders is estimated to be around 18 million. Starting in the late 50s or early 60s, skateboarding increased in popularity slowly every year, peaked in the late 80s, was not very popular through the 90s, and is probably at the height of its popularity now.
