It started in cali, surfers (like me) wanted something to do on land so the \"long board\" was created, then varitions of the long board became invented, and this is how we see the skateboard culture to this day

some surfers in Santa Monica, California, decided to attach rollerskate wheels to a plank of wood so they could 'sidewalk-surf' when the weather wasn't right for Surfing. They formed a team called the 'Z-boys'. Eventually people started doing tricks similar to those they would do on surf boards. They emptied pools and rode them as if they were waves. There is a documentary called "dogtown and z-boys" which is all about those people and how Skateboarding started.

You should watch it.
