It is used for self defense. Today's world is bad and if a bad guy attacks you then you can use your Martial Arts skills. Taekwondo is also good for getting (and staying) in shape and for develping discipline. As with other martial arts, there is memorization, and a lot of tedious repitition. It is by no means easy, but you can develop discipline and a good work ethic. Taekwondo can help you develop confidence. It's focus on kicking encourages the development of flexibility and ballance. While you may think that the way to get fast is to practice fast, that's not true. In order to get faster you need to get stronger. Some lunges, squats, and some hard kicks to bags should do the trick. I suggest a Google search for leg workouts, as I don't know them all.
