Ballet slippers (soft shoes) are typically made with a leather or canvas upper and a leather sole. Some slippers have a full sole (typically for younger students), and professionals tend to use a split soled shoe. Pointe shoes are made from a mold using many layers of burlap canvas and glue. The shank (covered by the sole) is traditionally made with a flexible leather board, but newer shoes are sometimes using synthetic materials in an effort to make shoes last longer. The shoe is covered by pink or peach satin (though other colors are made to match costumes, too)
Anybody who has been in ballet for many years and is old enough and mentallly and physically ready for pointe.
There are many types of dance shoes, designed for a specific sort of dance. Tap shoes have metal plates on the bottom in order to make the signature tapping sound that tap dancing makes. Ballet shoes are made of flexible material so as to not restrict movement as ballet requires much flexibility in the feet. Ballet shoes are designed to eventually mold to the individual dancer's feet. Certain shoes designed for Latin dancing have heels on them to force the dancer to carry more weight on their hips. Jazz shoes are very simple, no laces or buttons, just soft, flexible material to accommodate the variation that comes with jazz dancing. The bottoms of the shoes are stronger to protect the bottom of the feet in a way the soft material couldn't.
Ballet is the start of every form of dance. Ballet can help with co-ordination & balance. I'd definitely give ballet a go as it can help with many other forms to. It helped me with mine :)

It depends from person to person.
Every serious ballet school should hold classes for ballet. Ballet is very importanat if you want to succeed in dance and get better.
It depends. Usually 2-3 years of ballet training unless you learn fast. Ask your instructor. :)

In class/lessons you would most likely wear a leotard with ballet-pink stockings and ballet slippers or pointe shoes. If you were performing you would wear a tutu with stockings and Pointe shoes. You don't always wear pointe shoes, sometimes you wear ballet shoes/slippers.
Many shoes are made of leather, which comes from animal skin.
