The age that you start on pointe differs depending where you do ballet. Some schools even get girls as young as seven to go on pointe. Though I do not entirely agree with this as their legs are not developed or strong enough yet. It also can take up to 6 or so months once you get your pointe shoes (or even before) to complete training exercises to make sure you are ready and capable enough to go on pointe! It really all depends on a. how strong your legs are and b. when your teacher says she wants you to go on pointe! :D p.s. I started pointe at 11 :)
I started wearing pointe shoes when I was 11 and studying Grade 3 of the BATD syllabus. But I was very tall and therefore had to dance with girls older than me( similar height) so I didnt look stupid and therefore had to join in on pointe, personally I think this is a bit young as I have mangled feet.
Its simple i went on pointe when i was eleven so i was very young. My pointe shoes did put me through a lot of trouble and pain. But they did hurt the normal amount. You can get various things like ouch pouches, even methylated spirits helped. Or it can be as simple as getting your shoes fitted specifically to your feet. Don't let your shoes ruin the fun and carry on dancing! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Beginning pointe work doesn't always depend on how long you may have been dancing. For example if you are older than say 12 or 13 you may only need 1 or 2 years of ballet training before beginning pointe work. This is because pointe shoes can damage younger feet. However some young students are simply strong enough to hold themselves en pointe. Also it depends on what level of ballet you are. Once you reach pre-elementary then pointe shoes are compulsory if you wish to sit the exam for that grade. In preparation for pre-elementary then often dancers will spend 6 months or so before they reach senior ballet, preparing themselves and breaking in new pointe shoes so that the transition into senior ballet smoother. I hope this helps your ballet.
It depends on how old you are. If you are too young, your bones are too soft and they warp. You should be at least about 11 before you go one pointe. Second, it depends on how strong you are. Some teachers will do tests with you where they have you sit down and point your foot. They will then apply pressure left, right, and up to see if your ankle gives. There are exercises you can do to get your ankles strong enough for point. It is hard to describe without showing but you can ask your teacher for some of those excercises. If you do not feel ready of course, wait, but if you are old enough and strong enough it doesn't matter that you have only been in ballet three years. If you have talent then three years might have been enough to get you the technique you need. If you are unsure you can always go take a class at another school (most schools let you try at least one class free) and ask the dance teacher there for a second opinion without going into detail about your other teacher. Just ask that person after class if they think you will be ready for pointe soon. dragirl: ok up there they pretty much covered everything but also you can ask your ballet teacher if you can do demi-pointe/pre-pointe sometimes you can take a normal pre-pointe class or do it in pointe class. also if you luv how pointe shoes look (like i do) you can get demi-pointe shoes you CAN NOT DO POINTE IN DEMI-POINTE SHOES! i do normal ballet and pre-pointe in them they are a stiffer shoe i wish you luck

you are probably too young or your feet arent ready for them yet.

Some would say yes, as your feet have not properly developed, so pointe shoes may cause harm to your feet
If you care for your feet and build the muscles in your feet (by doing dyna band exercises) before starting pointe you should not have a problem. However if your start pointe when you are still young it can hurt your feet. Typically pointe shoes can be worn starting around age 12.
Practising pointe strengthens the ankles and legs, and also improves flexibility in your insteps (the front of the ankle). Dancing in shoes can inevitably cause rubbing, usually causing blisters on area such as the toe joints, but this will depend on your shoes, the shape of your feet and the padding you use. The pressure can also damage toenails, though it all really depends on the insensitivity of your training and the fit of your shoes. Learning pointe from a young age can influence the growth of the feet. Injuries are likely if dancing on pointe, especially is tired. The risk can be minimised with responsible training and learning to pace yourself.

'en pointe' is when a dancer goes right up onto her tippy toes on her pointe shoes, specially designed to help the dancer balance and distribute the weight of her body evenly on the box (flat part of the shoe which the dancer balances on). A dancer goes through many hours a week for about 1 - 2 years working towards going en pointe. It is a major point in any ballet dancers career and is a moment long awaited by all young girls who are interested in ballet.

All pointe shoes hurt, for some poeple, there first pair hurts the least for others it hurts the most. But when you first get pointe shoes you dont do much dancing on them, so it wont hurt as much. but it probably hurts more than you would expect.
